MATT KAYE: IT’S TIME

an old man walked up
to remember his priorities
his house was all white
from the chalk party he had
the night before
not that he knew about it
not that he cared
he just did
what he had to do
here’s where we’re not really
a part of his inner circle
so it’s time to wrap this up somehow
without using any punctuation
maybe just a little
a comma
a curse
a tiny sound
if possible
nobody must see us
crawling out of that old man’s life

*

begging me to stop
well
the sound of the street is loud
where are you

*

they came for me
all the way to finchley road
they didn’t take the tube
they didn’t take the bus
not even a cab
they walked
like a lynch mob
i remembered an old johnny cash song
it saved my ass
they ran
all the way down finchley road
then around o2
they disappeared
figures
the bus makes a turn there
the road gets tricky
johnny cash
never stops

*

i live here with my wife
what do you want
i hear you’ve got squirrels in your garden
even a young fox
that’s true
tell me
when do they pick up
the rent
they don’t
we feed it to them
even better
i’m in

*

now what does “očetnjava” mean
why do i have to know
i’m married, i’m an ignorant
i’m at my all-time low

oh fear you not, my little one
they’ll put you on a plane
and when you’re sixty-two, i guess
you too will be insane

*

can’t bargain
can’t plead
i’m not what you’d call
a success
but i own books
and at night, i lock doors
and in the daylight
i sing in jim ed brown’s voice
that’s right
i’m that special
but not successful
mind you
i can also grow impatient
i can get posh
i don’t eat at any given time
i have my needs
ok
one need
to keep all the furniture aligned
in case the irs people come
they’ll smile
i’ll lead
can’t bargain
can’t plead

*

great job
put that shit on the turntable
have faith in electricity
all things move in circles
if you tell them to
in a commanding voice
in a strong, lee marvin-like voice
great job
similar to mine
but mine doesn’t include cicadas
and pieces of plastic
i’ve been gone a lot
i know
i’ve been around
i admit
i’m mute now
but that’s an advance
a blessing
you’ll see
you’ll see
your voice fail you
your tongue doesn’t
your language-speaking abilities
grow stronger
then you have to move again
or die trying
so it’s airports airports
baggage
police
a little jazz
in the night
yes
i know
how to get in free
how to fool the customs
just climb in here
pick a record
you stay alive longer if you
do that before midnight
great job i say
repeat
after me
now
right now
